Health Benefits of Matcha

Aside from its aesthetic, matcha boasts a number of health benefits. It is rich in caffeine, amino acids, antioxidants and polyphenols, all which contribute to our health.

Energised and Focused Effects

Matcha was originally used in Japan to aid monks in their meditation practice. They would consume the tea to remain alert yet calm for hours of tea ceremonies. Matcha is rich in L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and a calm state of mind. Stress typically induces beta waves resulting in an agitated state, however, L-theanine promotes alpha waves which result in relaxation that is both energised and focused. Although L-theanine is found in most teas, matcha contains up to five times more. Additionally, it can enhance memorisation, support concentration and provide mental clarity without the jitteriness  and “crashes” associated with coffee.  Matcha is especially helpful for easing meditation and reducing anxiety.

Skin Benefits

Matcha also offers numerous benefits for your skin when applied and consumed regularly. It revitalises dull skin and studies show that the antioxidant, EGCG, in matcha can help the skin cell regeneration, transforming a dull complexion to a vibrant one. Moreover, matcha contains anti-inflammatory properties which combats redness and irritation from acne. The anti-stress and calming effects of matcha benefit us both inside and out. Drinking matcha can induce a state of calm, which helps soothe skin, particularly in cases of rosacea. The high levels of L-theanine help alleviate stress burden on your skin. Personally I use the ‘Krave Beauty Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser’ and I find that  it helps significantly with redness as well as brightening my skin! Matcha is rich in antioxidants and is a fantastic addition to any skincare routine.

Supports Heart Health

Finally, matcha also supports heart health. The EGCG content is highest in matcha in comparison to other green teas. These catechins help relax blood vessels and lower and stabilise blood pressure. Additionally, it can contribute to healthy cholesterol levels and prevent the buildup of plaque. Enjoying matcha alongside physical activity and a balanced diet can improve your heart health and potentially reduce the risk of heart disease. It is never too late to embrace healthy habits and adding matcha to your diet can offer lasting benefits!

Whether enjoyed as a tea, smoothie or in baking, matcha is a simple and effective way to boost your health! Consider trying matcha as opposed to coffee as a revitalising option when you need a focus boost and to give your body the antioxidants it deserves.
